Tom with Cape Epic partner Rafiki

As if racing the Cape Epic Mountain Bike race in South Africa, an 8-day, roughly 800 km race which climbs nearly 16,000 m, was not enough of an adventure for Tom Ritchey, the very next morning Tom flew to Johannesburg to prepare for his next adventure, a 12-day, 5,133 km journey via motor cycle to Rwanda.

And so the trip began...

The journey traversed paved pathways and dirt pathways littered with “serious potholes,”

and a 600km stretch of challenging sandy-muddy-dirt through Tanzania.

As a first time motor cycle rider, Tom experienced his share of crashes…

again…

and again…

Tom – “we helped each other out of many crashes…in which it almost ALWAYS took two people to lift our bikes.”

Once in Rwanda, Tom met with the Project Rwanda project team for a week before heading back to the states.

Tom - “I'll never forget the experience and the many amazing things we shared along the way through northern South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania and Rwanda.”
